Top Koh Tao Dive Sites

Capture the vibrant world beneath the waves. Koh Tao offers dive sites for every skill level, each with unique features perfect for photography and videography:

Chumphon Pinnacle:

Often hailed as one of the best sites, this deep granite pinnacle is for the more experienced diver. It's famous for its potential whale shark encounters (especially March-May & Sept-Oct) and massive schools of barracuda, trevally, and batfish. The anemone-covered rocks create stunning backdrops.

Sail Rock (Hin Bai):

Technically between Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, but a must-do trip! This premier site features a huge pinnacle rising from the seabed, famous for its vertical swim-through ("The Chimney") and abundant marine life, from tiny critters to large pelagics..

A series of submerged pinnacles offering dramatic underwater scenery. Expect impressive schools of snapper, fusiliers, and emperors swirling around coral-encrusted rocks. Great visibility often makes for stunning visuals.

Southwest Pinnacle:
Twins:

A fun and easy site near Koh Nang Yuan, perfect for all levels. Features two main rock formations with abundant reef fish, anemones with resident clownfish (Nemo!), and even small swim-throughs.

White Rock:

One of the most popular sites, especially for night dives. Two large rock formations host a huge variety of marine life, including moray eels, stingrays, turtles, and pufferfish. It truly comes alive after dark.

Located on the sheltered side of Koh Nang Yuan, this shallow site boasts beautiful coral gardens. Ideal for beginners, snorkelers, and macro photographers looking for colourful reef fish and intricate coral formations.

Japanese Gardens:
Green Rock:

Known for its exciting underwater topography, including numerous small caves, tunnels, and swim-throughs (requires appropriate training). Look out for triggerfish (can be territorial!), morays, and parrotfish.

Koh Tao's beauty extends far beyond its reefs. Capture the island's stunning topside scenery and laid-back vibe:

  • Koh Nang Yuan Viewpoint:

    • A short boat ride away lies this iconic trio of islets connected by a sandbar. The hike up to the viewpoint rewards you with arguably the most famous (and Instagrammable) view associated with Koh Tao – postcard-perfect turquoise waters and the unique triple-island formation.

  • John-Suwan Viewpoint:

    • Located at the southern tip, this viewpoint offers stunning panoramic views over Chalok Baan Kao Bay and Shark Bay (Thian Og). A moderate hike through rocky terrain leads to breathtaking coastal vistas.

  • Sairee Beach:

    • The island's main hub – a long stretch of sand lined with dive shops, restaurants, cafes, and beach bars. It's the heart of Koh Tao's social scene and offers spectacular sunsets.

  • Mango Viewpoint (and others like West Coast/Love @ Koh Tao):

    • Several viewpoints dot the hills, often requiring a motorbike or taxi ride. Mango Viewpoint provides fantastic elevated perspectives over Sairee Beach and the west coast, particularly beautiful late afternoon.

  • Chalok Baan Kao & Freedom Beach:

    • Explore the quieter southern bays like Chalok for a more relaxed vibe, or find secluded spots like Freedom Beach (often accessed near John-Suwan Viewpoint) for tranquil beach scenes.

  • Hiking Trails:

    • Lace up your boots and explore the island's interior. Trails connect various beaches and viewpoints, offering glimpses of lush jungle and coastal scenery away from the main roads.

  • Island Activities:

    • Showcase more than just diving! Capture experiences like Muay Thai training, Thai cooking classes, yoga retreats overlooking the ocean, or simply the daily life in the island's small villages.
